About this course

The Project Management Certification exam validates that candidates can create a Smartsheet solution to manage a project’s lifecycle. They have demonstrated the ability to use Smartsheet in the 5 phases of the project lifecycle as defined by PMI - Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing - including preparing, creating, and finalizing project plans, collaborating with core and extended teams, monitoring and reporting on project progress, and creating issue logs.

Qualified Candidate Description

Qualified candidates are licensed users who can create a basic project management solution in Smartsheet that follows project management best practices. They know how to use Smartsheet to collaborate with core and extended teams in each of the 5 phases of project management and can plan, create, and execute a project plan, communicate with collaborators, create and manage project risk and issue logs, and use reports and dashboards to monitor and report on project progress.

Additionally, the candidate should have at least 6 months experience using Smartsheet for Project Management.

Domain 1: Initiating (13%, 9 questions)
  • 1.01 Design a project request form to initiate projects
  • 1.02 Review information from the project request form before creating the project plan
  • 1.03 Create a new project plan (e.g., from a form, template, Save as New, Import)
  • 1.04 Create templates and build a template folder to use for future projects
Domain 2: Planning (33%, 23 Questions)
  • 2.01 Configure and format a project sheet to meet project needs (e.g., select column types, apply conditional formatting, add working and non-working days)
  • 2.02 Ensure stakeholders and core and extended teams are shared to the appropriate items
  • 2.03 Format a project's work breakdown structure using hierarchy and assign tasks
  • 2.04 Create task relationships (dependencies) and milestones
  • 2.05 Create a project baseline and baseline report to track progress
  • 2.06 Use formulas to track progress and variance in the project plan (e.g., budget, work hours, schedule, float, successors)
  • 2.07 Use sheet summary formulas to track key metrics
  • 2.08 Use Critical, Driving, and Summary Paths
  • 2.09 Design and configure sheets and forms to track risks and issues
  • 2.10 Use Logic and System Columns when creating forms to collect feedback and change requests
Domain 3: Executing (17%, 12 Questions)
  • 3.01 Use different sheet views (e.g., Gantt, Calendar, Card) to view and edit project information
  • 3.02 Adjust task lag and lead time
  • 3.03 Prepare data to be shown on a dashboard using sheets and reports
  • 3.04 Use Groups to efficiently communicate with project teams

Domain 4: Monitoring and Controlling (30%, 21 Questions)

  • 4.02 Notify, remind, and request updates from team members about reported issues
  • 4.03 Use cross-sheet formulas to reference data from other sheets
  • 4.04 Build a roll-up sheet
  • 4.05 Create reports to track project and task status
  • 4.06 Create reports to manage change requests, issues, and risks
  • 4.07 Create a summary report to compare and communicate project health and status across projects
  • 4.08 Design single and multi-project dashboards to report metrics

Domain 5: Closing (7%, 5 Questions)
  • 5.01 Create a project closeout checklist and report
  • 5.02 Archive project items for future reference (e.g., unshare sheets/reports/dashboards as needed, move rows from the active projects roll-up sheet to a closed projects roll-up sheet)

Exam results

The Project Management Certification exam is a pass or fail exam.  The exam results are reported as an overall score and a breakdown by domain.  The exam uses a compensatory scoring model, which means that you do not need to achieve a passing score in each section. You need to pass only the overall exam. An overall score of 74.3 (52/70) is required to pass the exam.

Each section of the exam has a specific weighting, so some sections have more questions than others. The score report contains general information that highlights your strengths and weaknesses. Use caution when interpreting section-level feedback.  

Scores specific to questions will not be reported.

Scores will be displayed at the end of the exam, and you can choose to email a copy to yourself. Scores cannot be used to evaluate against other candidates.
